A 19-year-old woman, Tamanna Yasmin, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws' residence in Maheshtala, South 24 Parganas, on Monday night. Tamanna, originally from Charial Badamtala in Budge Budge, had eloped with Mohammad Sanju three months prior to the incident. The couple’s marriage was later formalized according to Muslim Sharia law in the presence of both families.
Following the marriage, Tamanna’s family alleges that she was subjected to abuse and mistreatment by her husband and his family. On the evening of February 3, around 8 PM, Tamanna's family received a call from neighbors informing them that she was unwell. When they arrived at the house, they found her body hanging. Local residents helped cut her down and rushed her to Maheshtala Municipal Hospital, from where she was transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, where she was declared dead by doctors.
Upon further inspection of the house, Tamanna’s family found bloodstains on her saree and scarf. Her new mobile phone was found broken on the floor, and the room was in disarray, with the bed and other household items scattered. The Maheshtala Police arrived at the scene, recovered the bloodstained clothing and broken phone, and sealed the house for forensic examination.
Tamanna’s family has filed an official complaint at Maheshtala Police Station, naming her husband, Mohammad Sanju, and his family members as the primary suspects. The family alleges that the victim had been facing continuous mistreatment since her marriage. The police have initiated a murder investigation and launched a search operation to locate and arrest the suspects, who are believed to have fled the area following the incident. The authorities are working to gather further evidence to determine the exact circumstances leading to Tamanna’s death.
